Winter Adventures in an RV

Most people with RVs stow them away in the winter months, after properly winterizing it to withstand the cold. However, it’s totally possible to take your RV out for some winter camping as well!

Here in South Louisiana, winter camping might look pretty much the same as any other time of the year, but if you’re planning a trip further north in your RV, or if we get a cold snap, it’s good to keep these winterizing tips in mind before you head to the campground.

Pack extra warm clothing for winter RV camping

Of course, you’ll need warm clothes on your cold-weather camping trip, but it won’t hurt to pack more than you think you’ll need. After all, you’ve got the room in your RV!

Think about your clothing in terms of layers: something light like a t-shirt on the bottom, with a heavier middle layer (a sweater or hoodie), and a waterproof top layer. Make sure you have good gloves, hats, and most importantly, socks. Cold, wet feet can make any camping trip miserable, so make sure you have warm socks, waterproof boots when you’re outside, and warm slippers for when you’re relaxing in your RV.

Bring extra cold-weather supplies, like fuel for your RV furnace

The last thing you’ll want to have happen on your camping trip is running out of fuel. If your RV furnace uses propane fuel, bring extra. It’s especially important to keep your furnace running in freezing temperatures to prevent the water pipes from bursting.

Since your RV is a vehicle too, you’ll want supplies like tire chains or snow tires, as well as a snow shovel in case you get stuck. Finally, pack a hairdryer in the worst-case scenario where your RV’s pipes freeze. It can be the thing that keeps you from dealing with a burst pipe.

Prepare for winter adventures in your RV

The last thing to do before heading out into the winter in your RV is to make sure it’s properly shielded from the cold. Fortify the insulation in the cabin by taping the windows and covering up cracks, and even adding heavier drapes to seal the warm air inside. You’ll also want to wrap heat tape around your RV’s pipes, and consider adding a skirt to keep the wind out from the undercarriage.

Finally, keep your RV’s maintenance up to date. Check your antifreeze levels and get the engine warmed up, using the heater block if necessary. Then you’re ready to head out to your winter wonderland!
